Why provide translated materials?

Whether your organization is for-profit or not-for-profit, it may be a legal requirement and it often make sense as well.

  1. Hospital and Health plans benefit from directing consumers to the most efficient settings for routine, urgent and emergency care.

  2. Laws generally mandate that product packaging and usage instructions can be in specific languages.

  3. In the U.S. Title VI and various state laws mandate that language assistance be provided at no cost.

Many healthcare institutions and providers rely on outdated notions about providing language assistance. Your organization may be out of compliance if:

  1. It accepts or has accepted funding either directly or indirectly at any time for any program service or activity from federal government.

AND

  1. If any individual seeking services from the organization is unable to access the services in a manner equivalent that enjoyed by others due to language they speak.

Do LEP patients need to wait much longer for care? Can they call to make an appointment? Are they given or carefully explained the same information as other patients?
